Community Appreciation Month • 2025

Beginning November 1st: ALL full-size bottle purchases will enter you into a raffle for a chance to win a FREE themed prize box!*

Every year, we start working on our Community Appreciation Month ideas earlier and earlier because we aim to have them be more special, inspired, and reflective of our deep appreciation for our community than the year before (and we do keep trying to set the bar high, and to make sure you all know how appreciated you are!). To say we have been excited for this one is a great understatement, as this giveaway features collaborative efforts from across Portland and represents the true spirit of this wonderful city. From other pioneers of scent culture, such as OLO/ Siela, Maak Lab, Imaginary Authors, and Catherine Haley Esptein, to legendary local artisans in the world of food & coffee, and even our favorite local radio station, we have pulled out all the stops this year to make sure you know not only that we appreciate our community, but Portland as a greater community full of vibrant, kind, and thoughtful creatives and people in general. We are also excited to offer these prizes to our greater online community, so they can potentially see Portland through our eyes and appreciate the efforts of our collaborators from the comfort of their homes (though we hope that if you win and don’t live here, you’ll feel inspired to visit!). From the release of Ponte Etereo to this Community Appreciation Month, the theme of our entire year has very much been in celebrating the collaborative, committed, uniquely accessible “weirdness” that Portland is known for.

The spirit of Portland’s collaborative and welcoming artisanal ethos has been our inspiration for this year’s Community Appreciation Month raffle. This raffle serves as a grand collaboration across artisanal mediums and includes well-loved Portland staples such as Jacobsen Sea Salt, Steven Smith Teamakers, Woodblock Chocolate, Wallflower Coffee, and XRAY.FM. Our grand prize, the Portland Box, also incorporates fragrances from OLO, Siela, Maak Lab, Imaginary Authors, the ever-elusive Slumberhouse, as well as a fragrance and the book Nose Dive by local author/ perfumer Catherine Haley Epstein. Our other themed prize boxes also include offerings from FZOTIC, La Boticá, Rania J, and more. Scroll down further to see full details on our three prize packages.

Grand Prize • The Portland Box

Baque • Slumberhouse

Typically offered only in 30 ml bottles, Baque is amongst the most sought-after fragrances in the Slumberhouse line and deservedly so! The 100 ml bottle offered as the centerpiece of our grand prize is particularly hard to find. Even the shape of the bottle is coveted among die-hard collectors (though not as coveted as the metal-shouldered flask bottles, which now sell on second-hand websites for extremely high prices, sometimes even in the thousands of dollars). Baque is a gorgeously complex tobacco composition steeped in liqueurs and stewed fruits. It is quite ideal for any Winter mood, whether it be for comfort, a special occasion, or anything in between.

Fumerie Parfumerie has proudly represented Slumberhouse for nearly ten years, and the brand is one of the few that have been with us since day one. Tracy met Josh some time before opening Fumerie, and made a point to have the brand be an integral part of the Fumerie curation from the moment the shop opened. It is always bittersweet for fans of a micro-brand to lose the easy access to their favorite fragrances they enjoyed when the brand was completely obscure and new to the instance of such a meteoric rise in reputation; but if we’re being honest, it was only a matter of time before enough people had tried Slumberhouse until the word got out how incredible and singular these creations are. We are hoping the winner of our grand prize, The Portland Box, will find that this boozy, dense, tobacco masterpiece has been united with them in a way that feels inherently like destiny.

Notes apricot, straw, vanilla, tobacco leaf, parchment, amber, honey, cork, davana liqueur

Secondary Prize • The Cozy Box

Deixis • FZOTIC

One of the aspects of perfumery, and art in general, that we at Fumerie and many members of our community appreciate most is vulnerability. To many of us, the two folks who most exemplify this aspect of themselves in their fragrant art are Bruno Fazzolari and Meo Fusciuni. From Bruno’s earnest social media presence to his fantastic mailing list “Brunotes,” Bruno Fazzolari wears his heart on his sleeve and centers honesty in his creations and communications. Deixis is such an exemplary example of this concept, being that it was an emotional experience for Bruno inspired by his late father; a fact many of our community members who aren’t following him online in some fashion may not even know. As such may be the case, we have chosen to share some of his writing on the fragrance below.

“Many years ago, before artisan coffee was a thing, supermarket coffee was feeble. So my father, an early riser, would roast coffee beans before the sun was up for a dark, flavorful brew. The aroma would fill the house, rolling down the hall to my bedroom as I woke up. It’s one of my earliest scent memories. Like him, I’m an early riser. I don't roast my own beans, but whenever I make my first cup of coffee before it’s light out, this memory of my dad is in the back of my mind. I've carried forward his ritual of finding clarity in those quiet morning moments, cup in hand, as I blend formulas at dawn. My father, Rocco Fazzolari (“Rocky”), passed away last week at the age of ninety-three. If you’ve been following along here, you know that for the last three months, my husband and I have been caring for him in home hospice. It’s been exhausting, but we also had some excellent times with him. The only moments I’ve had to get into my workshop were early mornings, with coffee at my side when creative time put much-needed gas into my tank. Rocky earned his PhD in nuclear engineering in the late sixties when nuclear was considered the future of energy. His skills were in high demand. He quickly became a tenured professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Arizona. Despite this, he made a bold pivot in the mid-seventies toward solar energy research, which was considered fringe in those days. It wasn’t a popular choice with his department chair or colleagues, but he had tenure, so they couldn't fire him. He founded the first, and for many years, the only solar research lab in sunny Arizona. (Say that last part a few times to realize the world he was living in). He paid a price for being an early adopter. While recognized nationally as an expert, he was passed over for department promotions and weathered repeated budget cuts to his lab. But his students, armed with this foresight, went on to found successful solar energy companies while the rest of the world was still catching up. Several of them made millions. Rocky was a true morning person. I inherited this from him, along with his analytical mind and stubborn determination to follow convictions rather than conventions. The confidence and resourcefulness I had to become a self-taught perfumer over ten years ago also came from him. If something doesn’t work, you find a solution. If the coffee is terrible, you roast it yourself. These past months, I've been creating an amber fragrance during my quiet morning sessions. It became my sanctuary as my father declined—a place to process grief while still building something beautiful. This limited release will be called Deixis (pronounced dike-sis), referring to being present in a moment. It feels fitting. Sometimes, we create not despite difficult times, but because of them. This fragrance has become both my tribute and my anchor.” - Bruno Fazzolari

Originally released in a batch of 100, which sold out in under ten minutes directly from the FZOTIC website, Fumerie is proud to offer a bottle of the first-run edition of Deixis as the centerpiece of our Cozy Basket prize package. Deixis captures the meditative quality of early morning moments when the world is still and creation flows purely. A sophisticated amber that transcends seasons, Deixis offers the comforting depth of traditional amber accords reimagined with contemporary transparency and refinement. The fragrance will be available relatively soon for purchase from our website, but we do not have an exact release date at this time. Keep an eye on our newsletters to be in the loop, or snag yourself a raffle ticket for your chance to win a bottle for free!

Notes labdanum, vanilla, sandalwood, styrax, frankincense

Secondary Prize • The Indulgence Box

Musc Moschus • Rania J

The crown jewel of our Indulgence Box is undeniably perfect for tying the theme of this prize together. Rania Jouaneh is an incredible perfumer and is on our short list of creators who know how to showcase ingredients and specific elements of any fragrance they formulate in a very dynamic, focused, and uniquely impressive way. From our beloved Ambre Loup to the ultra-opulent Shah’ryar and everywhere in between, Rania J’s work puts a fine point on the elements of her perfumes she most covets in a way that is desperately appealing. Musc Moschus is no exception, and to many is the shining example of her skill set. While our staff collectively revere Ambre Loup as Rania’s magnum opus, there is absolutely no denying the astoundingly diverse types of fragrance lovers who find their way to a deep love for Musc Moschus.

Anecdotally speaking, you never know who is going to fall for Musc Moschus. On its surface, it is an elegantly dense spun-sugar musc that a great many would be tempted to simply call a “gourmand.” But once you start to smell it, especially if it is worn, you catch yourself not only finding a seemingly endless depth and nuanced complexity that is truly difficult to describe. What we witness often here, sometimes in such a departure from the direction someone is exploring (or, surprisingly often, even against their objections to the gourmand genre in general), is that Musc Moschus has the rare potential to be nearly anyone’s new favorite fragrance. For a fragrance this rich, that is a rare feat. For a fragrance this impressive and versatile, it not only makes sense- it is only a matter of time before almost everyone has heard of it.

Notes bergamot, strawberry, blackcurrant, sandalwood, iris, vanilla, cashmeran, white musks
