Fumerie is Ten Years Old!
Please enjoy a personal message from Fumerie Parfumerie Founder, Owner, & Creative Director Tracy Tsefalas, below. On behalf of everyone here at Fumerie, we sincerely thank you for being a part of our community!
We are incredibly grateful to all of you for the kindness, inquisitiveness, and support that you have shown us over this last decade. We are fortunate enough to have an incredible community of fragrance enthusiasts who embrace the world of olfactive art with such openness and passion.
Being an entrepreneur was never a conscious goal. Although I had already been in the industry for over twenty years, I had never considered running my own shop. I was eventually drawn by a vision that drove me to create a space for building an alliance not only with the fragrance community but the broader small business community as well. Those early days were a whirlwind—so many ideas and inspirations I was determined to bring to life. It was during that time I had the absolute pleasure of meeting others who were also drawn to fragrance and its endless opportunities for exploration. Many of you from those early days are still here, and the community we've built together truly feels like family.
As the business has grown and our Fumerie team has expanded, it's been a joy to witness the creativity, passion, and genuine care that each person brings to the overall experience. What makes this especially meaningful is that nearly all of our current staff were once devoted customers at Fumerie—they understand and embody our mission because they lived it first. While each team member has their own unique approach, we share a unified understanding: our customers deserve to feel seen, heard, and like they've experienced something special. This commitment from our team is what makes Fumerie feel like home.
Early on, I was excited about implementing in-store events. The possibilities felt endless, and I looked forward to building stronger bonds between ourselves, fragrance creatives, and our community. It was vital to me that the boutique provide a destination for those who wanted to learn and explore in a welcoming environment—a space that allowed time for genuine discovery. One of our earlier, more memorable events was with Profumum Roma. Fabrizio Cipriani, Profumum Roma's longstanding US ambassador for the brand, convinced Luciano Durante, one of four siblings who launched the brand back in 1996, to join us for an evening to share their wonderful creations with the Portland audience. This was Luciano's first visit to the United States. He spoke minimal English, which allowed Fabrizio to translate. Due to their close friendship and comfortable banter, there was much laughter and playfulness as everyone enjoyed smelling their way through these classic Italian fragrances. Witnessing your engagement and the deep impact of that evening was powerful. This confirmed the joy of learning from and exploring this industry in a manner that was shared directly from the perfumer, founder, and creative. Since that time, we have only expanded our outreach and collaborations. Recently, we joined with the Portland Art Museum's Tomorrow Theater for a smell-o-vision event that quickly sold out. Both the Tomorrow Theater's head of programming and you are eagerly anticipating our next film/fragrance collaboration. We truly enjoy creatively joining with artists and other businesses to bring you the opportunity to learn and expand your understanding of this wonderful world of fragrance.
Another vital part of setting Fumerie apart was our very careful and deliberate curation. From the beginning, we reached out to what we considered to be some of the highest quality, inspired fragrant brands in the world. Examples include Serge Lutens, MDCI, and Parfum d'Empire at our launch, expanding over the years to include smaller and more experimental lines such as Fischersund, Marlou, and Adâme. I'm fortunate to regularly attend European fragrance conferences in search of the most interesting, inspired, and quality works to add to our selection and share with you. One of the most meaningful experiences came more recently when we had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with perfumer Meo Fusciuni to create a fragrance solely for Fumerie. It was such an honor to work with Meo and experience creating a fragrance from the ground up. Never did I dream I would have a hand in creating a fragrance, and this collaboration expanded my own knowledge of this endlessly fascinating world in ways I couldn't have imagined, ultimately resulting in the honor of being able to share Ponte Etereo with the community that I have only grown to appreciate more over the years.
Ten years ago, we opened our doors with a simple belief: that fragrance deserves to be experienced, understood, and celebrated in community. You believed in that vision too, and you've made Fumerie what it is today. Whether you were here on day one or discovered us yesterday, you are part of our story. Thank you for your curiosity, your loyalty, your willingness to explore, and for bringing your own passion to this space. Here's to the next decade—and to discovering what amazing fragrances and experiences await us together.
Sincerely,
Tracy
