Like all white florals, it has its own set of peculiar facets alternatively described as mushroomy and blue cheese-like. As a result, good gardenia fragrances should be considered a specific art of the highest order; an olfactory illusion performed for our enjoyment. Nuit Andalouse is one such marvel, authored by the incomparable Cécile Zarokian. The fragrance opens with a violet accord, the citric sweetness of orange oil and a burst of orange blossom. The fragrance soon segues into the heart of tuberose and ylang-ylang, both of which are legible up close. However, the magic of this fragrance is in the combined effect of the materials which work together seamlessly to produce an impressionistic rendering of a gardenia in full bloom. Now that it has finally arrived, we are happy to report that Dryad is another instant classic and a fitting follow-up to Salome. The fragrance opens with a bitter green verdancy flanked by effervescent citrus. Fans of midcentury green chypres will find a lot to love here (the opening is redolent of Yves Saint Laurent's 1964 release Y). The depth and richness of Dryad are utterly beyond compare, so much so that it might easily be mistaken for a vintage composition from one of the great French houses. The fragrance is at once mossy, leathery and animalic, centered around a lovely bouquet of white flowers and narcissus. The swirling tapestry of notes created a kaleidoscopic effect; at one moment the leathery facets shine through only to be eclipsed by moss or resins or floral notes. We really cannot say enough good things about this fragrance, but it truly must be experienced to be appreciated. This is one of those fragrances that everyone should own and for those of you looking for a reference chypre to add to your collection, look no further. At this point, I think it's fair to say that Papillon has established itself as one of the giants of modern perfumery.
